Golden Cross

Restoring a famous Scottish historical tugboat to the Clyde after 57 years: providing the vessel with a useful business & community role...

The Golden Cross is crewed & assisted by off-duty servicemen & women, merchant navy officers and able seamen, retired military personnel, businessmen & women who give up their time and volunteer to allow this Clyde-built ship to fulfil a useful business & community role for Scotland.

The Golden Cross is now the last operational vessel of her class in the world and is still powered by her Crossley of Manchester 4 cylinder 2 stroke 882hp main diesel engine. She also boasts a prototype MWD Hindmarsh 2:1 reduction gearbox which is linked by chains to Chadburn double telegraphs in the bridge: an early 1950’s system that – for the first time – allowed captains to control direction and speed of the tugboat without assistance from the engine room. The tug also features an original Thomas Reid of Paisley anchor winch.

The Golden Cross was built by Scott & Sons of Bowling on the Clyde and launched in 1955 in time to assist the then new Royal Yacht Britannia on her 1st Overseas Departure from a British Port (1956 State Visit to Sweden) with HM Queen Elizabeth 11 & HRH The Duke of Edinburgh travelling overseas from the UK on their Royal Yacht for the first time. In 1997, the tug was also invited by Buckingham Palace to go back on duty to escort HMY Britannia on her Final Farewell Voyage (Pool of London). The Golden Cross also sounded the traditional ‘Cross Tugs’ signal ‘We Wish You A Safe Passage’ on the sad occasion of the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales.

 image010.jpg

Supported by Fiona Hyslop, MSP. Cabinet Secretary for Culture & External Affairs, Scottish Government, the long term plan of Project Golden Cross is to deploy the tug on the Clyde and Western/ Northern Isles to highlight Safety at Sea procedures to marine contractors, aquaculture companies, wave & tidal projects, O&G linked services and leisure craft users.

Supported by Whyte & Mackay, it is hoped that the Golden Cross can also go on show initially at the Crowne Plaza Glasgow (Scottish Conference & Exhibition Centre SECC pontoon) where home and overseas guests with an interest in defense, marine, alternative energy and other sectors (guests suggested by Scottish Government Trade Policy Advisors) can take the opportunity of seeing services, systems and products promoted on board. Guests can then discuss trade & exports - yet at the same time,  be seen to be actively supporting a Scots Community Project designed to save lives.

The plan is to invite guests from China, India, Brazil, Vietnam, Chile, United States, Scandinavia, Gulf States etc to attend events between 2013 and the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow (2014). Emphasizing new products and technology in offshore, marine, O&G, alternative energy and other sectors including luxury goods, Golden Cross will present visual displays and product demonstrations on the banks of the Clyde.

GSS Marine Services move Golden Cross to a safe mooring.

Due to recent violent storms and extremely high winds, sometimes reaching 100mph in Argyll & Bute, Project Golden Cross has been delayed for the past few weeks: the tug being moored on the old navy pier at Rosneath which has afforded her adequate protection from adverse conditions.

ardentinny-450.jpg

The tug will be moored in 20 meters of water alongside the Ardentinny Hotel in Loch Long.

The tug’s permanent mooring, kindly donated to her by the Ardentinny Hotel on Loch Long - facing the Royal Navy Armaments Depot (RNAD) at Coulport – will soon be installed with assistance from GSS Marine Services of Rhu. Various other marine companies and linked organizations have donated services, equipment or provided funds towards sponsorship of this non-profit making community project. Offshore Workboats (Clydebank) have donated mooring anchors and Fendercare (Yokohama) of Norfolk have donated a 1.4 ton mooring buoy. The mooring, designed by marine specialists FPM Henderson Ltd (Clydebank) comprises two shore anchors of 1.6 and 1.2 tons at 5 meters depth attached in Y formation by 34 meter lengths of 46mm chain to a 4.5 ton claw anchor at 20 meters depth. The 24 meter 28mm riser chain donated by Sheerwater Marine Services of Sandbank then attaches to the buoy. Galt Transport of Dumbarton assisted with delivery of heavy equipment.

Brings Golden Cross home to the Clyde...

Having been moored on buoys in Cornwall for over 2 years, receiving little maintenance during that time – it was felt that a 600 mile passage to Scotland under her own power would be inadvisable.

The group of volunteers attempting to restore and save the tug also realized that in these uncertain financial times, raising thousands of pounds to organize a tow would be difficult to say the least. The project was rescued thanks to Svitzer Marine who provided Golden Cross with a tow back to the Clyde at the end of 2011.

The tug is made ready for the tow by a team of volunteers from Scotland.

Svitzer’s Ormseby Cross – a state of the art vessel - coincidently based in Middlesborough (the first port that the Golden Cross went to following her launch on the Clyde in 1955) was due to be deployed as a relief tug at Greenock and was ordered to Scotland taking a southern route so that she could pick up her ageing relative at Falmouth.

Golden Cross in Cornwall

8 years – Highlighting RAF, RN & HM Coastguard plus United States Coast Guard Search & Rescue

From 2001 to 2008, the ‘Golden Cross’ proceeded to sea to over 100 ports around Europe promoting the sterling work carried out by military and civilian rescue services at home and abroad. Constantly on TV, radio and featured in magazines & newspapers, the tug attended various exhibitions and events and hosted functions on board.

Thousands of families visited the ship as she staged events together with the RAF, RN, HM Coastguard, USCG, US Embassy, European Space Agency, NASA, Rolls Royce, Castrol Marine & The Svitzer Marine Group.

The Golden Cross is therefore no stranger to staging events and holding functions. Promoting Search & Rescue between 2001 – 2008, the then Secretary of State for Wales & Northern Ireland, The Rt Hon. Peter Hain, MP and Armed Forces Minister, The Rt Hon. Don Touhig arranged for the Golden Cross to operate with 22 Squadron RAF SAR & Royal Navy SAR at HMS Gannet at various ports & events around the UK including the Glasgow River Festival, Belfast Titanic Festival, Plymouth’s Navy Days & the Svitzer Marine sponsored ‘Cardiff World of Tugs Exhibition’. The tug went on show with over 20 Royal Navy warships at various ports  in a five year period – again, promoting essential community emergency services provided by servicemen & women and the products that assist them in carrying out their life saving work. The tug was also given permission to operate under a Royal Air Force Ensign.

In Northern Ireland, at Carrickfergus, HMRT Golden Cross opened to the public and took part in various local events to enhance community relations. Supporters and visitors included royalty, senior politicians and diplomats from home and overseas plus leading figures from defense and industry. Thousands of families throughout the UK & Europe have had the chance to learn of their maritime heritage because of Golden Cross. Many youngsters have been made aware of opportunities in marine engineering and even in NASA & the European Space Agency’s space program: the tug linking in with the latter organizations to promote heritage and achievements in space.

There is no doubt that the interest is there to support these type of events and it is hoped that by securing a useful community and business role for this historic Scots ship that in future years the Golden Cross will have ‘Safe Passage, Fair Winds & Following Seas’.

Tug gets Hollywood treatment

Competitors in the dredging, workboat,

tug and salvage world joined forces to

assist a Hollywood actress in her mission to

save a historic tugboat, and see the vessel

deployed to carry a Safety at Sea message

to the maritime world.

Actress and martial arts stunt co-ordinator,

Suzie Wong (Man With The Golden Gun,

Full Metal Jacket, Miss Saigon) and a group

of volunteers are embarking on a project

that will guarantee the restoration of famous

historic Clyde-built tugboat HMRT Golden

Cross, the vessel that assisted the Royal Yacht

Britannia on its fi rst overseas departure

in 1956, and was invited by Buckingham

Palace to act as sole offi cial escort to HMY

Britannia on Royal Yacht’s farewell voyage.

SMD of Newcastle on Tyne, MacDuff

Ship Design, Aeolus Wind Power, Offshore

Ship Design, Pramac Generators, Svitzer

Marine and a host of smaller Scottish marine

contractors, are just a few of the companies

involved with the project.

Donald Cameron, MacDuff Ship Design,

said: “Saving maritime heritage is no easy

task, but this non-profi t making exercise is

designed not only to restore a famous Clydebuilt

historic tugboat to her former glory,

but allows her to take up a community role

of promoting Safety at Sea to commercial

marine operators and leisure craft users in

Scotland whilst highlighting the achievements

of [the] Royal Navy, Royal Air Force, HM

Coastguard and Mountain Rescue.”

The next two years will also see Golden

Cross holding functions and presenting

displays at high-profi le locations to

encourage trade and exports, with various

guests involved in areas such as in defence,

offshore, oil & gas, maritime, engineering

and alternative energy sectors attending.

Golden Cross is now the last operational

vessel of its class in the world and is

still powered by its original Crossley of

Manchester four-cylinder, two-stroke, 882hp

main diesel engine.

Supported by Scottish Government, cabinet

secretary for Culture & External Affairs,

Fiona Hyslop, the fi rst function, hosted by

Whyte & Mackay, is scheduled for the end

of April alongside the Crowne Plaza Hotel

Glasgow (SECC) pontoon on the Clyde.

Furious at so many Scottish coastguard

station closures and reductions in search and

rescue services in the UK, Wong also intends

for her vessel to be used to carry a Safety at

Sea message to commercial marine operators

and leisure craft users.

Wong said: “So much local knowledge

will be lost as local coastguard stations

close. With Scotland being at the forefront of

new wind, wave and tidal projects, together

with the country’s close links to oil & gas

production, you would have thought that

search and rescue services that are already

hard pressed would have escaped budget cuts

instigated by London politicians.”

Ship saved

When Winchester marine

communications company Standard

General Manager , Dean Croome and

his colleague Adie Collins immediately

stepped in to assist.

Standard Horizon donated state of the art

replacement VHF fixed & handheld radio

equipment to the vessel currently berthed

in Cornwall.

Adie Collins said, “We were aware that

volunteers were restoring one of Britain’s

first diesel-geared tugs and that the

Switzer Group were due to tow the vessel

to the Western Isles where the Scottish

Government were backing this non-profit

LHR Marine Support Project Golden Cross

Tuesday, Sep 27, 2011

Marine Safety is a key concern for LHR Marine, therefore they are delighted to announce their sponsorship of Project Golden Cross.  Saving maritime heritage is no easy task but this non-profit making exercise is designed – not only to restore a famous Clyde-built historic tugboat to her former glory – but allow her to take up a community role of promoting Safety at Sea to commercial marine operators and leisure craft users in Scotland whilst highlighting the achievements of Royal Navy, Royal Air Force, HM Coastguard and Mountain Rescue.

With assistance from the Scottish Government, 2012/13 will also see Golden Cross holding functions and presenting displays at high profile locations to encourage trade & exports: home and overseas guests with an interest in defence, offshore, oil and gas, maritime, engineering and alternative energy sectors attending.  The Golden Cross is now the last operational vessel of her class in the world and is still powered by her original Crossley of Manchester 4 cylinder 2 stroke 882hp main diesel engine.

On the back of this announcement; The Defence Interaction Intelligence Agency (DIIA) has produced a special report entitled: A Special Report on Mooring, Marine & Offshore Safety Equipment.

LHR Marine’s reputation for selling Mooring Equipment is well known internationally and they also represent top quality manufacturers of: Working at Height Equipment, Marine Safety Products, Anti-Slip Solutions, Lifting & Handling Equipment, Workwear, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and Industrial SuppliesLHR Marine’s recent successes include global agreements with major subsea shipping companies and international mooring companies which have been established from their service provision for over the last ten years from Aberdeen, Scotland and Perth, Australia.

Hollywood Rescue     Oil & Gas / Aberdeen newspaper / Shiptalk/ Your Subsea News

October 19th, 2011 |

Following support from LHR Marine of Aberdeen,  Offshore Ship Designers of Montrose and Oil & Gas, Marine & Scientific giant SMD of Newcastle, Hollywood actress Suzie Wong, has managed to save the historic Scots tug ‘Golden Cross’ – one of the world’s first diesel-geared tugs. The vessel was successfully returned to the Clyde after 56 years as she berthed at Holy Loch Marina. The 62 hour passage from Cornwall to the Clyde was completed in record time. The ‘Golden Cross’ was assisted en route by the state of the art 33 meter long 433 ton tug ‘Ormseby Cross’ joining the Svitzer fleet at Port Glasgow.

The ‘Golden Cross’ was launched at Bowling by Scott & Sons in 1955. She was immediately dispatched to Middlesborough in time to assist the then new Royal Yacht Britannia on her 1st Overseas Departure from a British port (1956). In 1996, the tug was found abandoned in a navy yard and was rescued by Oriental actress & martial arts expert Nancy Kwan who became famous in her role as Suzie Wong.

The following year, at the invitation of Buckingham Palace, ‘Golden Cross’ went back on duty to act as sole Official Escort to HMY Britannia on the Royal Yacht’s Final Farewell Voyage (Pool of London / Portsmouth) prior to decommission. Although the main engine of ‘Golden Cross’ is fully operational – one of the last working examples of a Crossley of Manchester 4 cylinder 2 stroke diesel, it was felt that a 500 mile sea journey under her own power would not be advisable until a full maintenance program had taken place. The tug had been moored on buoys in Cornwall for three years following a five year role visiting ports and events throughout the UK & Europe highlighting RAF, RN & HM Coastguard rescue operations.

Captain ‘Jeb’ Jevens of Golden Cross said, “I would like to thank Svitzer captains Mark & Steve of ‘Ormseby Cross’ on a very professional operation -especially taking into consideration the heavy swell and sea state off Lands End and visibility dropping to zero in very thick fog from the Bristol Channel to Stranraer.”

He went on to say, “Normal sea duties for my volunteer crew from Argyll & Bute were made  more difficult by the fact that to ensure ongoing warning signals were sounded every 2 minutes, the ship’s 1950′s generator & compressor had to be continuously working throughout the voyage to maintain air tank pressures for the ship’s rather ancient fog horn. Thankfully, Standard Horizon had fitted the latest radio equipment in the bridge for the passage.”

Alba Sailing of Oban provided the ‘Golden Cross’ with essential life rafts and safety equipment for the long passage and without these, the tow could not have taken place. Whyte & Mackay & Tunnocks have also joined local Scots sponsors WindowPlus & Waterside Properties on this project to save the vessel. Holy Loch marina were helpful by offering her a temporary home while her own permanent mooring in Loch Long is organized. Aeolus Windpower also assisted.

In the coming months, restoration of the vessel will continue and plans finalized for her role to assist the local community during 2012/13 promoting maritime safety and products linked to the marine environment, sub-sea engineering, O&G and alternative energy. With threatened closure of many coastguard stations including the Clyde & Firth of Forth, there couldn’t be a better time for ‘Golden Cross’ to take up a role of highlighting Safety at Sea to commercial and leisure craft users.

Fyona Hyslop, MSP. Cabinet Secretary for Culture & External Affairs has kindly backed the non-profit making Project Golden Cross and it is hoped that the ship will go on show at the Crowne Plaza Glasgow in 2012 to highlight Scots products and services to overseas politicians, busnessmen & women.

Actress Suzie Wong commented, “I am amazed at the generosity of marine, sub-sea and O&G companies that have stepped forward to save this small but important part of Scots maritime heritage – especially at a time when companies are having to deal with an ongoing recession.”

It would seem that following this support, the Golden Cross is heading into ‘fair winds & following seas’.
